Mahler is is known for living large as most of his works are scored for extended orchestra and are quite lengthy. His third symphony is no exception and, in addition to its rich orchestration that features a full complement of clarinets and a complete choir, breaks two records. Not only is it his longest piece, but it is also the longest symphony in the standard orchestral repertoire. The work contains six movements and typically weighs in at 100 minutes or more!
If you’ve never heard the piece, I invite you to watch the following YouTube video. I love Bernstein’s renditions of pieces and this is no exception. (The action starts in this video at 1:27)
I hope to see you at the concert!
Sean.
Congrats Sean! Looking forward to hearing it man it’s gonna be great
